Maricela Figueroa Zamilpa

Edith Maricela Figueroa Zamilpa is a primary education teacher at the Regional Center for Primary Education in Iguala, Guerrero.
She holds a degree in Graphic Design from the School of Design of the School of Fine Arts in Mexico City, a Master’s in Education from the National Pedagogical University (Universidad Pedagógica Nacional), Morelos campus, and is a doctoral candidate in Art History at the Autonomous University of the State of Morelos.
She also completed postgraduate studies in Visual Arts at the National School of Fine Arts (ENAP) of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). She served as Outreach Coordinator at the National Pedagogical University in Mexico for 30 years and taught for 17 years in the Design faculty at Universidad La Salle at both undergraduate and master’s levels. She has also taught drawing at the Institute of Fine Arts and at the Center for the Arts in the State of Morelos.
She has diversified her work as a creator in photography and the visual arts, with more than 100 photographic exhibitions held in her country and abroad, including the USA, Canada, and Europe. Her large-format exhibitions have been shown in the Metro Cuatro Caminos station in Mexico City; Rejas Solares in Acapulco; the Museo Soumaya at Plaza Carso in Mexico City; Plaza Loreto in Mexico City; the Feria del Mundo Imperial in Acapulco; the Museo de la Ciudad de Cuernavaca; as well as galleries at various Mexican universities and several Mexican consulates around the world.
Her works have been published in a variety of national and international print media—magazines, newspapers, books, posters, and more. She is also a textile artist who uses free embroidery; her creations have been exhibited in Mexico and the United States, in museums and consulates.
She received the Sor Juana Medal awarded by the Secretariat of Public Education in Morelos for her outstanding work as an arts educator.
She won second place in the state photography competition of Guerrero, third place in the national photography competition convened by the state of Aguascalientes, and third place in the professional category of the national competition “Mexico in an Image,” which drew more than 19,000 entrants and was organized by Museo Soumaya and Nikon México.
She won first place in the national photography contest “With the Hand on the Heart,” organized by the Party of Democracy in the state of Morelos.
She placed fourth nationally in the Mexico City Metro photography competition, organized by the Mexico City Metro.
Fifth place in the national competition “Reveal an Artist” during the Picasso exhibition at the Palacio de Bellas Artes, organized by the INBA (National Institute of Art and Design) and the Palacio de Bellas Artes (Palace of Fine Arts).
She was selected among the four best Mexican photographers to participate in “La Ruta” (The Route), organized by “Lo Hecho en México” (Made in Mexico) and Nikon Mexico.
She is the producer of the film “Costa Chica” by director Nicolas Segovia, in collaboration with the University of Toulouse, France. It was screened at the Cineteca Nacional in Mexico and in countries such as France, Africa, the USA, Panama, Colombia, Germany, the USA, Canada, among others.
Her visual work encompasses themes such as embroidery in a free and playful manner. Her creations have been exhibited in Mexico and the United States, in museums and consulates.
She has collaborated with Taiwanese artists on installation art in Taiwan on a free-form basis.
Currently, her photographic work focuses on the communities of Guerrero, Morelos, and Oaxaca, creating important records of the autochthonous coastal dance from Guerrero and Oaxaca states.
